They were surprised to find the innate immune system in archaea because they assumed Carl Woese was correct. Woese claimed there was more than one domain of life. They are not claiming Woese was wrong. They simply make the understated claim that their experimental evidence eliminated all assumptions about mutation-driven evolution in all environments where biophysically constrained life exists.
If your read her book, you will see how Suzan Mazur and others were able to predict the claim that now links virus-driven energy theft from archaea to Zika virus-damaged DNA in human infants. For 20 years, what's been known about transgenerational epigenetic inheritance has predicted the end of neo-Darwinian pseudoscientific nonsense, albeit only after a few more battles like those from "The Public Evolution Summit."
